Tenure-track Associate Professor position at SFU for contribution to the teaching of any of the core counselling courses and support of graduate student research. Candidates will contribute to the growth of the Counselling Psychology program at the SFU Surrey campus. The program includes the SFU Surrey Counselling Centre, which works in collaboration with the Surrey School Board. Along with clinical training, the Centre supports research in counselling practice and supervision.

Commencement date: September 1, 2016

Role requirements: Applicants will be expected to teach and develop counselling related courses and programming at both the undergraduate and graduate level, work with pre-practicum and practicum students, and to supervise graduate research.

Requirements documents: must possess a doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology or related field, the ability to develop a program of research related to Counselling Psychology, and a minimum of three years of counselling practice experience in the field. Preference will be given to candidates who can contribute to three or more of the key teaching areas of the program including:

Theories and ethics of counselling

Family counselling

on Forests and Climate Change

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Forestry and WWF International Forest and Climate Programme are sponsoring an international roundtable to facilitate discussion by Indigenous Peoples’ representatives of the important issues of forests and climate change.

The roundtable will support ongoing preparations by Indigenous Peoples for the Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in December 2015 as well as beyond.

The roundtable will bring together Indigenous representatives from all regions of the world, including Canada, to strategize on best ways for policy advocacy at the national and international levels.

Open meeting with UBC community

An open meeting with the UBC community and the general public is organized to interact with delegates and share views on forest governance and climate change.

In 2014, the inaugural Indigenous Health Conference was a call to action for health equity for Indigenous peoples in Canada. The conference was the first of its kind in Canada and attracted enormous media attention including the Globe and Mail, CBC radio and Metro Morning.

Building upon this success, the 2nd biennial
Indigenous Health Conference will continue the dialogue and focus on the determinants of health and reconciliation. Sessions will discuss working towards reconciliation, major health issues for Indigenous peoples in Canada and also potential solutions to address them.

The conference is led by
Dr. Anna Banerji, a member of the Order of Ontario and an advocate for Indigenous women and children.

Assistant Professor, Ethnic and Women’s Studies

The Ethnic and Women’s Studies Department in the College of Education and Integrative Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Native American Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall of 2016.  The department seeks candidates specializing in settler colonialism, sovereignty, tribal law/politics, literature, cultural production and performance, and/or environmental justice. Additional specializations, but not restricted, in the areas of, research methodologies, critical race theories, comparative social movements, labor, education, digital and social media, Queer/LGBT Studies, Gender Studies, identity formations, and multiethnic/cultural identities will be considered.

The Position

The candidates will be expected to teach courses in their field of specializations, as well as additional EWS courses.  In addition, the candidates should have the ability to teach comparative courses, integrate multiple disciplinary cultural and global perspectives, and incorporate educational technology in their teaching and professional activities.  Candidates should also be committed to working with the campus cultural and gender centers and demonstrate a commitment to diversity in higher education.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in Ethnic Studies, Cultural Studies, American Studies, Native American Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, Gender/Women’s Studies, or other related field from an accredited university by September 1, 2016;
  • Ability to teach comparative courses and integrate multiple disciplinary cultural perspectives in Native American Studies and Ethnic & Women’s Studies;
  • Evidence of scholarly engagement and potential;
  • Experience of successfully teaching undergraduates at a college or university setting;
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student populations.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate success in critical/interactive pedagogical practices;
  • Seek specializations in settler colonialism, sovereignty, tribal law/politics, literature, cultural production and performance, and/or environmental justice;
  • Additional specializations, but not restricted, in the areas of, research methodologies, critical race theories, comparative social movements, labor, education, digital and social media, Queer/LGBT Studies, Gender Studies, identity formations, and multiethnic/cultural identities will be considered;

Academic Success Counselor provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assesses the student’s stage of development and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.  Advises students on academic, career and personal issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option. Identifies options for student to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and amendments to student’s program of study; assists students in completion.  Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs and refers students to appropriate resources for assistance.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling or related field and 1 year academic advising experience; a minimum of one 1-3 years related work experience in an academic environment. Master’s degree in related disciplined and related experience preferred. Experience with electronic student management software is a plus. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

“Native Leadership in Community Building ”

“Native Leadership in Community Building,” is the theme for the 17th Annual American Indian Studies Association conference. With the many challenges native communities and nations are facing, leadership is key to community building. While political officials are seen as leaders, individuals and families are also taking the initiative to transform their native communities and nations for the better. These individuals and families are undertaking work on a number of levels, such as language and culture maintenance/revitalization, health improvement, environmental protection, culturally-­‐based education, and many other pertinent issues, that build strength and capacity in our communities.

This year’s conference looks to examine and initiate discussions about leadership and community building. This includes, however is not exclusive to: language, culture, art, history, environment, governance, gender, sexuality, health, storytelling, education, family, philosophy, policy, and all other topics which would include leadership and community building.

The organizers of the AISA Conference welcome proposals for paper presentations, panel presentations, round table discussions, and workshops.

Consideration will be given to other topics that relate to American Indian issues. Paper/Session/Panel Proposals:
