Call for Papers: Essays on The Indigenous Everyday
Your auntie dies and you get a letter from the Secretary of the Interior—who knew they cared? You have a fantasy of punching—no, scalping—that guy in the PTA who just said to you: “I have Indian blood too, but not enough to get money.”  Once again, you draw the unhappy chore at a cocktail party of explaining what was not cool about Buffalo Soldiers, President Lincoln, and The Revenant. Also not cool: naming a dog “Denali.” Like everyone else, you go home for the holidays. But you also go home for ceremonies to grieve the losses of the last two centuries: relatives lost in battlefields, museums, boarding schools. You say the Lord’s Prayer in your Native language because you can. Not because you believe it. Or maybe you do.
             What is your riff on The Indigenous Everyday? How does history live and breathe and sometimes completely ruin the ordinary stuff of life? What do you wish non-Natives understood about indigenous experience, history and culture—the good, the bad, and the absurdly beautiful? What riffs do you tell your friends to get you through? How do you, in Charlie Hill’s words, “turn poison into medicine”?
            Our proposed essay collection, I [Heart] Nixon: Essays on the Indigenous Everyday, seeks complete manuscripts of creative nonfiction—personal essays, riffs, mixed-genre pieces and prose poems—that reveal the quotidian pain and ordinary beauty of indigenous life today. We aim for a collection that deftly incorporates humor, history, and individual voice from a range of writers. We invite submissions from writers in the United States, Canada, and the indigenous Pacific.  When applicable, submissions should include a short bibliography “For Further Reading” at the end of the piece, as we aim to market this collection to high school, university, and popular readers. No in-text citations, please! The publisher will be announced later this fall.
            Complete manuscripts should be formatted double-spaced, one-inch margins, in 12-point Times New Roman font.

We invite candidates to contribute to the conference theme: “Teaching search and research”. The essence of this conference aims to capture the mutual interrelations between the academia and schools in order to combine discourses and align positions. The particular interest is to bring practice into theory and theory to practice. The ISATT 2017 encourage submissions that examine the diverse teaching contexts and the many changes occurring across education research and practice: from design to implementation.

Assistant Professor – Teacher Education Department, University of the Fraser Valley

The University of the Fraser Valley invites applications for a full-time faculty member in its Teacher Education Department (TED) which includes undergraduate level prerequisite courses and a post-degree Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) for prospective elementary, middle and secondary teachers. The individual will be expected to teach courses in the TED, be a faculty mentor to teacher candidates during practica, work collaboratively with a variety of faculty and seconded faculty mentors, and be part of the TED candidate admissions and orientation processes. The successful applicant will also be expected to maintain an active research and/or scholarship agenda with a focus on teacher education and/or K – 12 education. The program is located on the Abbotsford campus.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Education. As the chief academic and executive officer of the College, the candidate will possess (a) outstanding scholarly credentials, including recognition as an accomplished academic leader both nationally and internationally; (b) a demonstrated commitment to research, undergraduate and graduate education, outreach, and equal opportunity; (c) a demonstrated ability to attract, retain and advance a diverse and superior faculty, student body, and staff; (d) the capacity to be a visible leader in the State of Illinois on educational issues; (e) outstanding leadership and communication skills to effectively interact with all stakeholders and to be a strong advocate for the College and its mission; and (f) a thorough understanding of financial management and aptitude to generate resources for the College. Candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree and have a distinguished record of scholarly research, teaching and service accomplishments commensurate with an appointment at the rank of full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Dean of the College of Education reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and is a senior administrative position with a seat on the Provost’s Council of Deans.

 

This full-time, 12-month appointment has a negotiable start date with salary commensurate with experience. Course – Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education – Register by January 23

This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will help you envision how Indigenous histories, perspectives, worldviews, and approaches to learning can be made part of the work we do in classrooms, organizations, communities, and our everyday experiences in ways that are thoughtful and respectful. In this course, reconciliation emphasizes changing institutional structures, practices, and policies, as well as personal and professional ideologies to create environments that are committed to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous peoples.

 

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take the MOOC, it is not just for teachers and will build competence and understanding applicable across a variety of communities.

 

Dates: January 24 – March 7, 2017

Call for Nominations – Faculty of Education Teaching Prizes

Killam Faculty Teaching Prize 2016-17

The Faculty of Education has a long history of emphasizing the importance of exceptional teaching. The Faculty recognizes two full-time tenure track faculty members each year with a prize of $5000 and a plaque, awarded at convocation. All Faculty members who hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track appointment are eligible for a Killam Faculty Teaching Prize.

 

Nomination Process: Faculty and students wishing to nominate a faculty member are encouraged to start early and consult their Department Head or Director as the nomination process proceeds. Nominators may contribute to the following documents (PDF):

a) One letter of nomination indicating the case for awarding a teaching prize to the nominee (may be signed by more than one nominator) addressed to the Department Head or Director. The letter should clearly address the five criteria outlined with specific examples for each.

b) Up to six support letters (maximum of two pages each) may be attached to the nomination package. Individual letters (may be from more than one person) may focus on some or all of the criteria. Nominators are encouraged to submit a set of letters that represent the diversity of the nominee’s teaching responsibilities.

 

Nomination deadline: The nomination package must be sent electronically to the Department Head or Director by Feb. 10, 2017.

Sessional and Lecturer Faculty Teaching Prize 2016-17

The Faculty of Education has a long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching. In recognition of the significant contribution that Sessional and Lecturer faculty members make to our programs, the Faculty of Education offers a Sessional and Lecturer Faculty Teaching Prize to outstanding educators. The prize includes both a plaque and $1000 and is awarded at the year-end Faculty meeting in May. The award is open to any individual holding an appointment as a Sessional, Lecturer or Adjunct Teaching Professor (seconded teacher) during the current academic year.

Funding – Aboriginal Graduate Fellowships, Due: Feb 10, 2017

The University of British Columbia offers multi-year fellowships to Master’s and doctoral Aboriginal students. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition, administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in consultation with the First Nations House of Learning. Approximately a dozen new fellowships are offered each year. All Aboriginal students are eligible to apply, but priority is given to Aboriginal graduate students whose traditional territory falls, at least in part, within Canada. Applicants may or may not be UBC graduate students at the time of application – the competition is open to both incoming and continuing graduate students.
