The Oxford Education Research Symposium is a forum for presentation of papers and discourse by scholars who have a particular interest in the theory and practice of universal education. You are invited to present a paper on an aspect of education research, or you may wish to attend as an observer or panel member. If you wish to present a paper you will be requested to submit a brief abstract for review by the Programme Committee. Papers presented will be subsequently peer reviewed by external readers for possible inclusion in Symposium books or as sponsored journal articles.

Job Description:

The Intergenerational Landed Learning Project is a unique community education and research project that teams school-aged youth with adult volunteers to build a multigenerational community that learns how to nurture the land and live in balance with the earth, through growing, caring for, cooking, and eating local food.

The Landed Learning Multimedia Education Assistant will use a variety of media (visual, written, and digital) to support the academic, programmatic, research, and fundraising objectives of the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project (ILLP). The Multimedia Education Assistant will develop multi-media educational programming for participants in the Landed Learning Project, as well as integrate multi-media into the communications strategy for the Landed Learning Project. By using multimedia, the student will help participants deepen, enhance, and solidify learning, as well as cultivate enthusiasm for gardens-based learning among the wider community.

The student must be able to commit to being available Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9am-Noon.

Hourly wage: $16.41

10 hours/week

March-June 2017

The responsibilities include:

Designing and implementing media education programs within the framework of the Project

  • Develop and facilitate photography workshops for elementary program participants in the garden
  • Develop and facilitate blog training workshops for elementary program participants to share their garden-based learning experiences
  • Provide on-going support youth to document their experiences and learning through photography, writing, and photo journalism

Managing the Project’s photography equipment, photos, and other data archives

  • Maintain and troubleshoot program cameras used by program participants
  • Liaise with ILLP teachers to facilitate ongoing documentation, data collection, and reporting of student activities within participating classes
  • Organize, maintain, and archive ILLP documents (e.g. Photographs, surveys, consent forms, volunteer criminal record checks, volunteers hours)

Developing and managing the Project’s communication strategy

  • Document ILLP visits and events through digital photography
  • Select and provide photos for communication and outreach on social media and print materials Student Job
  • Liaise with Web Assistant to design a visual appealing and informative website, relevant to stakeholder audiences (educators, volunteers, parents, students, and funders)
  • Manage social media (Facebook page and blog) to keep stakeholders connected with the Project through a consistent and dynamic on-line presence

Supporting Program Manager and other program activities as needed

Qualifications:

  • Must be a UBC Student
  • Must be available Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 9am-Noon
  • Experience developing curriculum and working with children
  • Aptitude in and experience with on-line communications and social media
  • Expertise with digital cameras, iPads, and digital photography for photodocumentation and reporting (Having your own camera is an asset)
  • Ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact with children, community volunteers, staff, teachers, and donors
  • Interest in and respect for people of all cultures and backgrounds
  • Self-motivation, flexibility, and excellent organization skills; ability to identify and prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work effectively both in a team setting as well as independently; team player
  • Physically healthy and active. Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Familiarity with, and commitment to the vision and mission of the Intergenerational Landed Learning project is an asset
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check is required

A renewed focus on broader cultural education that confronts rather than ignores Canada’s “colonial history” could help steer Indigenous youth away from the criminal justice system, according to a new report by Crime Prevention Ottawa.

The report, titled Culture as Catalyst: Preventing the Criminalization of Indigenous Youth, was released during a presentation at Ottawa City Hall Tuesday morning.

According to the report, traumatic events stemming from “colonizing policies” such as the residential school system contribute to the disproportionately high rates of poverty, poor education and unsafe housing experienced by Indigenous people in Canada.
As a result, the paper concludes, Indigenous youth and adults are highly over-represented in the Canadian criminal justice system.
“The research also shows that a connection to culture is very important for all young people, but that for Indigenous people in particular that connection to culture is directly linked to their sense of identity,” said Melanie Bania, the report’s author. Read More…

Researcher targets ‘glaring’ gaps in indigenous health care

The “glaring” health gaps between indigenous people and the rest of Canada is widening, says the new scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health.

“It’s pretty bleak,” said Dr. Carrie Bourassa, who took over the position Feb. 1.

The institute is being established in Sudbury with the Health Sciences North Research Institute, where researchers are engaged in cutting-edge research on healthy aging, cancer care, infectious diseases, precision medicine and northern and Indigenous health. It’s the first time an Institute has been established outside of a large urban centre.

Bourassa’s role, among many others, will be to train and mentor new scholars in indigenous health research, and to make sure research creates opportunities to close those gaps.

“From diabetes to HIV and AIDS to suicide rates, we really need to get a handle on the underlying impact,” Bourassa said.

Most of the issues stem from the intergenerational trauma associated with the ongoing impact of colonization, she said. Researchers can’t seem to get a handle on the complex ways those underlying social detriments interact.

She said she knows the solution can be found in communities, because they are the ones who understand the issues better than anyone else. Read More…

Simon Fraser University invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Community-Engaged Adolescent Mental Health.

The proposed Chair will be embedded at SFU Surrey – a vibrant community hub located in one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities. S/he will take a leadership role in building research capacity that benefits the City of Surrey, and that will have important implications for adolescent mental health in British Columbia, across Canada, and beyond. The Chair will work closely with City of Surrey partners from multiple sectors such as health (including the Fraser Health Authority and its regional Child and Youth Mental Health Substance Use program), education, law enforcement, social services, government, and community partners. The Chair will also create ties with other researchers working in the area of adolescent mental health and mental health policy. The Surrey-based CRC holds promise for increasing linkages with the Surrey community and strengthening SFU’s research presence in this city and beyond. Over time, it is anticipated that this Chair will leverage his/her Surrey-based research program to capitalize on innovative developments and collaborative research opportunities at the local, national, and international levels.

We are seeking an outstanding and innovative researcher who is internationally-recognized in the field of adolescent mental health with a focus on one or more of the following areas: program implementation and evaluation; diversity and culturally sensitive programming; determinants of mental health; and intersectoral and upstream approaches to enhancing mental health. The preferred candidate could have a disciplinary background in health, education, or the social sciences (e.g., psychology).

The successful candidate will play a leadership role in establishing a cutting-edge, community-relevant research facility and lead a research program focused on the advancement of community-based and clinically relevant strategies designed to maximize the mental health of young people.

This position is contingent upon the applicant being awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair; therefore, only senior investigators with outstanding publication records and a proven track record of working with communities and developing research centres/institutes will be considered. Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in American Indian Studies, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow for the 2017-2018 academic  year.  This fellowship program provides a stipend, a close working association with AIS and campus faculty, and assistance in furthering the fellow’s development as a productive scholar.  Applicants should have an ongoing research project that promises to make a notable contribution to American Indian and Indigenous Studies.  While concentrating on research, the fellow will teach a course in American Indian Studies.  Furthermore, the fellow is expected to participate in the intellectual community of the American Indian Studies Program.

Stipend and Benefits: The Fellowship stipend for the 2017-2018 academic year is $47,476, including health benefits.  An additional $5,000 will be provided for the fellow’s research, travel, and related expenses.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required. Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by August 15, 2017.  Preference will be given to those applicants who have finished their degrees in the past five years.  The one-year fellowship appointment period is from August 16, 2017, to August 15, 2018.  Upon review, this appointment may be renewable for an additional year.
