UFV is situated on the unceded territory of the Sto:lo nation in the heart of the Fraser Valley, about an hour East of Vancouver. The Philosophy department is strongly committed to indigenizing our curriculum and our practice. In line with this commitment, the successful candidate will be expected to bring Indigenous perspectives to teaching and the development of new courses.

The philosophy department at UFV is a small but active department that offers a wide range of courses and programs. In addition to a comprehensive range of courses in the History of Philosophy that covers both the Analytic and the Continental traditions, we offer a range of courses in Applied Ethics, Comparative philosophies, and more. We offer our students a Minor and Major in philosophy, as well as an option for an Extended Minor and an Applied Ethical and Political Philosophy Minor (see With this position we seek to strengthen our offerings in Applied Ethics and Indigenous philosophies, with an emphasis on the indigenous philosophies of North America.

The Philosophy Department at UFV invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position. The candidate will specialize in Applied Ethics and Indigenous (North American) Philosophy. The ideal candidate would be expected to develop and teach courses in Environmental Ethics, Feminism, and Indigenous Philosophy at both the lower and upper divisions, as well as contribute to teaching in other areas of philosophy (i.e., Reasoning, Morality and Politics, Knowledge and Reality), at least at the lower division. The successful candidate will have completed, or be near completion of, a PhD in Philosophy with an established portfolio of research in one or more of the above areas.

As a primarily teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic, and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; is qualified to instruct across a range of the undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can develop new and innovative courses. Experience with incorporating indigenous perspectives will be central, but teaching international students, and managing the needs of a diverse classroom environment will be considered a strong asset. Likewise, we are committed to supporting and engaging international students and the diverse classroom population at UFV.

Experience and interest in developing experiential learning opportunities, and a willingness to work with the Indigenous Studies Major and Minor Program, is highly desirable (see The successful candidate will show aptitude for working in team situations; demonstrated ability to participate in innovative inter-disciplinary teaching; a collaborative approach to engaging in department business; and an active commitment to academic service.

In addition to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and to fostering a vibrant environment within our philosophy programs and our broader community, the successful candidate will also be expected to maintain a program of scholarly activity or research, preferably one which involves students, is related to the areas set out in the description above, and/or is community-linked. It is expected that all faculty members shall engage in an on-going process of professional development.
