EDCP 508 (031): Researching in Cross-Cultural and Global Contexts open to all students

The focus of this advanced research methodology course is to guide students in the design and enactment of cross-cultural research with Indigenous and other marginalized peoples in local and global contexts. While mainstream research primarily privileges the generation of new knowledge, there is growing call for re-generation of the ‘ten thousand different voices’ that still exist on this planet to address global social and ecological injustices and other critical issues facing life on earth. These knowledges are based on millennia of observation and lived experiences that bring together human, non-human and more-than-human intelligences and agencies, gesturing toward radically reimagined and enacted research affiliations, relationships and responsibilities.   


This course offers students an opportunity to examine the challenges of conducting research across different worldviews, knowledge systems, languages, geographies, and ecologies. In this era of epistemic hegemony, neoliberalism, global capitalism and climate change, students will consider research method(ologie)s and research projects that promote equity, social and environmental justice, and living in a good way with all our relations. Students will critically reflect on their own philosophical, historical, cultural, epistemological, ontological, and relational life narratives and how they influence the methodological shaping of their own research projects. It is recommended that students come to this course having already completed EDUC 500: Introduction to Research Methodologies.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence

Is there more to being smart than just IQ? Absolutely! Research consistently shows that a person’s Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a key factor associated with success in career advancement, relationships and overall well-being. It is also vital to leadership. The good news is that you can develop skills in EI to be a better leader: to develop and influence others, build relationships and create environments that support the realization of common goals. This workshop will establish links between EI and leadership, and will explore the fundamentals of emotional management. Learning to work with emotions, rather than denying and ignoring them, will have a positive impact on your life, career and leadership paths. This workshop will introduce you to the concept of EI and help you to develop skills to: manage your emotions, regulate your behavior and act wisely across situations, communicate what you want in a way that reduces negative reactions in others, take the lead in fostering a work environment that energizes, motivates and optimizes performance. Summer Course: 2016 Indigenous Existential Resistance – The Sundance Practice Summer Institute
Indigenous people face a difficult paradox related to the dual challenge of surviving within an individualist, competitive and consumerist society while keeping alive alternative ways of knowing and being. The traditional Sundance ceremony is one practice that affirms a different existential approach to life not defined by modern capitalism. The Department of Educational Studies is offering a course from May 21 to July 11 on the Sundance ceremony. Designed in partnership with elders from the Kainai community, the course combines lectures and seminars at UBC Vancouver and a ten-day visit to the Kainai reserve in Alberta, which includes a four-day observation of a Sundance ceremony.

Hoop Dancing & Smoke Dancing workshops

The CFNDF Youth Outreach program provides a unique opportunity for youth (ages 14-24) to receive mentorship under leading Indigenous dance artists. The program’s goal is to encourage youth to engage with the practices of song and dance and to instill within them the confidence to know that their voice is valued. Bridging traditional and contemporary forms, the artists leading the workshops are all innovators of their art forms. The classes are open to all youth with no previous experience necessary.

Hoop Dancing: James Jones facilitates a movement based workshop centered on the practice of hoop dancing. He teaches participants the fundamentals and basic steps of hoop dancing and speak about its history and significance and his connection to contemporary practice.

CTLT Offering Graduate Student Certificate Program

Graduate Student Certificate Program

The Graduate Certificate Program (GCP) is a year and a half long (September 2016 – December 2017) teaching development program that supports the development of graduate students’ expertise in teaching and learning. It serves both graduate students seeking excellence in teaching and learning in their future roles as faculty, as well as those who will apply the skills outside of traditional faculty roles. The GCP prepares graduate students who seek faculty positions focused on teaching and learning specifically, and more broadly creates a cohort of graduate students positioned for future educational leadership.

The Graduate Certificate Program consists of the following elements:

  • Blended Cohort – Meets twice per month on Friday afternoons for two hours per meeting, and includes two hours of online work per month.
  • Practicum – The GCP requires that you arrange two one-hour (minimum) practical teaching experiences per term as a guest instructor, in the community, or in industry. You will also observe two one-hour sessions taught by your peers per term.
  • Mentoring – You will work with a mentor, under terms to be discussed with your mentor, but which will include some classroom observation and some classroom discussion. Please see the Mentorship Guidelines for more information.
  • SoTL – You will engage in a small-scale Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) pilot project based on the work you have done in your practicum. Please see the Practicum Guidelines for more information.

Please note that there will not be an application fee however, successful registrants will have to pay a registration fee. Details on the fee will be posted shortly.

Who can apply?

The Program is open to all graduate students who have completed an Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) and will remain graduate students until the end of the year 2017.

Summer Course: Place-based learning in Huu-ay-aht Territory

This intensive two-week course (Jul 24 to Aug 4) offered by the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre will give undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to engage directly in the emerging realm of place-based learning. The course is structured around foundational questions, such as, “How are people and place connected in ecologically unique landscapes?” and “What can we learn from the relationship between land, water, history, and contemporary revitalization efforts in the region?” Instructor: Dr. Tracy L.
