This talk will explore Indigenous resurgence and nationhood through story, song and video. Leanne will discuss resurgence as an ongoing intervention into the colonial project by sharing works from her recent album f(l)ight (RPM Records), her new book of short stories This Accident of Being Lost (House of Anansi) and her forthcoming academic work on the The Radical Resurgence Project (UMP Press). Symposium: Indigenous Resurgence in an Age of Reconciliation March 15-18, 2017

  • This symposium will bring together many prominent Indigenous scholars in the fields of Political Science, Law and Indigenous Governance to consider the long intellectual tradition of Indigenous resurgence within these fields while looking toward new directions in consideration of the challenges and possibilities produced in the era of reconciliation. The aim in hosting this event is to cultivate an environment for productive discussion of a central concern facing Indigenous resurgence: our relationships with creation (land, water, animals, ancestors) and how these relationships have been impacted by reconciliation politics.

Indigenous Governance Program Manager, University of Arizona

Over the last 20 years, the Native Nations Institute (NNI) and the Indigenous Peoples Law & Policy Program (IPLP) have made the University of Arizona a leader in the field of Indigenous nation building.
As part of the University’s Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy, NNI carries out research and works with Native nations and organizations to support Indigenous self-determination, to strengthen Indigenous governance capacities, and to achieve Indigenous community and economic development objectives. As part of the University’s James E. Rogers College of Law, the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program (IPLP) is a center for innovation in research, training, and advocacy in Federal Indian Law and the international law of Indigenous Peoples.
In 2013, NNI and IPLP came together to create the Indigenous Governance Program (IGP). Through the IGP, practitioners and scholars from around the world have access to the research and teaching of NNI’s and IPLP’s renowned faculty in the fields of Indigenous governance and Indigenous rights. The IGP includes the possibility of individuals earning: a Masters of Professional Studies in Indigenous Governance (UA credit); a Professional Certificate in Indigenous Governance (UA credit); a Continuing Education Certificate in Indigenous Governance (non-UA credit); certificates of completion in a number of distance-learning course offerings; and/or the option of taking any combination of live and distance-learning courses for personal enrichment.

The student research assistant will support projects for the Project on Water Governance and Indigenous Law, a multi-year SSHRC Partnership Grant.

Position will be approximately 10 hours per week from September to December, with the possibility of extension and further research collaboration.

Participants needed for Indigenous government discussion forum

Dear fellow graduate students,

I am writing to invite you to participate in an ideas incubator/discussion forum for issues related to Indigenous government.

I am a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Law at Allard Hall, and my area of research is on conceptions/perceptions of the legitimacy of traditional Indigenous legal systems as a core function of government. I am inviting you to join me to meet periodically for a continuing discussion on the issues arising in the course of our research, including the challenges we face in moving our research forward.

Our first gathering took place on March 24th. This was an introductory conversation, to meet each other and to discuss how we might support each other through these group discussions. Position Details The Department of Native American Studies at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for one tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2016, subject to budgetary approval.

A Ph.D. (or near completion) is required, combined with a strong teaching, research, and publication record in Native American Studies. The area of research is open, with interest in candidates with multidisciplinary backgrounds in Indigenous or traditional knowledge and symbolism; Indigenous pedagogical and ontological perspectives; Aboriginal law, rights, and treaties; First Nations governance; economics; political science; history; or community development. Since Native American Studies faculty are required to teach in a wide variety of areas, candidates with experience and expertise in any one or any combination of the above listed areas will be given preference. Fluency in or knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Aboriginal Environmental Management and Governance. We welcome applications from scholars who will advance environmental and social justice issues as they relate to Aboriginal communities in Canada through interdisciplinary research, teaching, mentoring, and community engagement. We seek a collaborative colleague who will address topics such as marine or terrestrial resource use, management and governance; spatial planning; social-ecological systems; food security and sovereignty; climate impacts; or water resource management.

Relevant background disciplines include: Indigenous studies; anthropology; sociology; community and regional planning, political science; environmental or social history; geography; human ecology, or political ecology. Our preference will be for candidates with experience conducting primary fieldwork and engaging with Indigenous communities and government entities. Eligibility for certification as a professional planner is desirable.

The candidate should hold a PhD. Under exceptional circumstances we may consider outstanding candidates with a mix of education and experience that could be considered equivalent to the PhD. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise and mentor graduate students, will engage with Aboriginal communities, and will have demonstrated the ability to develop and maintain a high caliber research program. Candidates should have strong aboriginal cultural knowledge and experience. Relevant teaching experience is very desirable.

Starting date for the position is negotiable, but we hope the successful candidate will assume the appointment by September 2016.

Join the Peter Wall Institute for a panel discussion on integrating traditional Indigenous values into modern governance systems, land management and economic development. The panelists include Gwen Philipps (Canada), Donna Flavell (New Zealand), Daryle Rigney (Australia), and Chris Caldwell (USA). The panelists will incorporate elements from personal experiences and information from the previous three days of the International Research Roundtable.
